Step by Step to
Install Tabw.net.bin on a machine

Assumptions

This web page assumes that you have copied the tabw.net.bin folder in one of its zipped forms to a CD or USB Flash drive. It also assumes you have copied the free skating dll TabwResources.dll to the same location or plan to use just the free skating content sheets supplied with the tabw.net.bin package. We will start showing how to get each of the forms onto the desktop.

The images in this example were created on a Windows XP machine. Windows Vista and Windows 7 will look somewhat different, but will work the same. In some cases Windows Vista or Windows 7 will issue pop up boxes asking permission to change things.

If you are on the machine you use for Tabulating and connected to the Internet, you can click the tabw.net.bin.exe link and select Run from the selection. This will get you to the point part way through the "Transferring the Files" section. Copying the TabResources.dll file from the Internet is explained after the section on copying from a folder.

Drive Letters

Windows drive letters vary from machine to machine. In general, the C: drive is the operating system and install programs. On most machines, your user data is placed here. The D: drive is normally the CD/DVD drive although this changes if there is more than one hard drive partition. When you plug in a flash drive it will be assigned some other drive letter. This is usually the next alphabetical letter which has not yet been assigned such as E: or F: or G:.

Setup Steps

If this is not the first time you have put the Tabw.net.bin folder on your machine, you may want to save the old copy, just in case. If this is the first time, go on to Transferring the Files. Click the Tabw.net.bin folder with the right mouse button and select Rename from the pop up menu using the left mouse button. The name of the folder will be become writable and the current folder name (Tabw.net.bin) will be highlighted. If you start typing now, you will replace the Tabw.net.bin with whatever you type. If you just want to add something on the end like "-old" or the release number "-3.7.0.4", press the right arrow key to position the cursor to where you want to type in the name.

Transferring the Files

For the examples, we will use the flash drive located at drive letter G:. If your data is somewhere else, substitute your drive letter as appropriate. To see what letters are on your system, you will want to open a Windows Explorer window. The most consistent way of doing this is to press and hold the key with the "Windows" logo and press the letter e.

My Computer 1

The sample computer happens to have 2 hard drives and 2 cd drives. After you plug in the flash drive you will see it appear as a new drive letter. Note that the "My Computer" window has two panes. One on the left and one on the right. We will refer to these as the left pane and the right pane. Hopefully this will not cause you too much pain.

My Computer 2

Above you can see the drive letter G: has appeared with the caption "Removable Disk." To access the contents of the drive either click the driver letter once with the left mouse button in the left pane or double click the drive letter in the right pane with the left mouse button.

My Computer 3

In the above image, you see the self extracting zip file tabw.net.bin.exe which contains the tabw.net.bin folder and the dll file TabwResources.dll which contains the free skating diagrams. Depending upon your view options, what you see may look more like the image below.

My Computer 4

The above image shows the files as icons instead of names. This is controlled by the View menu pull down which is shown in it's extended form. The examples on this web page are done with the view set to Details. Whether or not you see the ".exe" or ".dll" as the last part of the file name is dependent upon other options. Microsoft likes to randomly move the these options around between versions of Windows.

Use the right mouse button to click the tabw.net.bin.exe and choose Open from the pop up menu using the left mouse button. Note that in general, the right mouse button brings up a pop up menu and the left mouse button is used for selecting an option or double clicking an item to take the default action (usually "Open") for that item.

I Installed Using the Direct Web Install

If you installed using the direct web install so that TABW is in your start menu, you can still get the dance sheets working. Use the Instructions for downloading the DLL but save the DLL in "My Documents" instead of the Tabw.net.bin folder.

Removing the Flash Drive

You can close the window with the flash drive. If you are using a flash drive, always remember to safely remove the drive. In the icon try in the lower right corner of your screen, find the Safely Remove Hardware icon and click it with the left mouse button. You may have to first click the Show Hidden Icons button. Select the drive to be safely removed, in this case G:. You will get a pop up saying it is safe to remove the flash drive.

Creating a Shortcut for TABW

To make it easy to run TABW you can easily put a shortcut on the desktop. In the Windows Explorer window for Tabw.net.bin use the right mouse button and grab the icon for TABW. Drag the icon to your desktop and choose "Create Shortcut Here" from the pop up menu.

Create Shortcut

If you want desktop icons for Skate.net or other programs you can repeat the process.
You can drag the icon to another location on your desktop after you close the explorer window.
If you accidentally let go of the mouse in the wrong location, choose cancel from the pop up menu and try again. This can be tricky with a mouse pad.
